Control Your Personal Computer From Your Smartphone

Want remote access to your Windows 8 or 8.1 PC? It's a lot simpler than you think, and if you've already got one of the Windows Phones already on the market all you need is an app.

The new style Start screen on Windows 8 and 8.1 personal computers is designed for touch sensitive screens which you can leave your sticky finger prints all over.

If you don't have such computer hardware it can take a while to find your way around the newest version of Microsoft's personal computer operating system with just a QWERTY keyboard and a track pad or a wired or wireless mouse.

If you already have a Windows Phone 7, 8 or 8.1 you can make life much easier for yourself by installing Win8 Controller from the Windows Phone Marketplace or Store.

With it you can control your computer using the same touch-screen gestures as you would if you had a touch-screen. If you haven't got a Windows Phone you can get one brand new at the bottom of the smart phone market for just a couple of hundred dollars.

On your Windows Phone 7 go to Marketplace, or if you have a Windows Phone 8 or 8.1 go to Store, and type Win8 Controller in the Marketplace or Store Search box type "Win8 Controller" and click either "try" or "buy" if you are happy to spend $2 without trying it first. The app will take a few moments to install.

One installed your phone takes you through through a tutorial of how to use it.

Left Click, Right Click. Middle Click and Double Click are first up. Dragging is second on the tutorial followed by Scrolling, Zooming, the Start Screen, Going backwards and forwards, Adjusting the volume, showing Windows 8 and 8.1 Charms, Switching between apps, App options, Closing apps and Showing tiles.

Before you can put what you have learned into practice on your personal computer you need to download the Win8 Controller server app to your personal computer. Without it the phone cannot communicate with your computer over your home wi-fi network. You get the PC app from

Click "Download Win8 Controller Server App" and once it has downloaded into your Downloads folder right click the zipped folder and click "Extract all". Follow your nose during the installation process and select "Typical" from the Setup Type option.

You will need to pair your Windows Phone to your personal computer which is, again, quite simple.

If your phone and PC are not connected to the same wi-fi network you can connect your PC to your phone by turning on Internet sharing in your phone's Settings and typing the password your phone gives you on your computer.

With the right apps installed on both your Windows Phone and Windows 8 or 8.1 personal computer you can tackle just about any computing needs remotely.

While we're talking about Windows Phone, the newest Phone 8 and 8.1 models connect via USB or wi-fi and have a filing system that mirrors Windows on the desktop. Copying music from a Windows PC to a Windows Phone is as simple as copying from the one Music folder on the PC to the other Music folder on the phone.
