Microsoft Surface Pro 4 lands

The Surface Pro 4, Microsoft's new high end tablet computer, has landed in New Zealand.

Microsoft trumpeted the arrival of the new look device late last week.

There are six models available from the entry level 128 GB Core m3 model with 4 GB of RAM for $1,599, to the 512 GB Core i7 with 16 GB of RAM for $3,999 at the top end of the range.

If those prices seem steep, consider you're getting a fully functional cloud computing orientated Windows 10 personal computer in the form factor of a tablet device. There's really nothing else like it on the market.

You could try and compare it with a laptop, but then it has a removable keyboard and a touchscreen. Some laptops share that capability, but are much bulkier.

You could also try to compare it with an iPad, but it has far more capability than the Apple competitor because it can run grunty desktop computer software such as full versions of Adobe Photoshop and Premier and Microsoft Office and have mice and USB devices connected to it.

Microsoft is marketing the Surface Pro 4 as the tablet that can replace your laptop and in many cases, such a claim would be true.

"Powerful, portable and designed to maximise productivity, Surface Pro 4 brings the best of a laptop and the best of a tablet together in one sleek device," the company said in a press statement.
"Weighing in at under 800 grams with a larger 12.3" PixelSense display, a versatile, continuous kickstand, improvements to processing power, upgraded cameras and up to an Intel® Core™ i7 processor and up to 16GB RAM, the Surface Pro 4 is light yet powerful and boasts up to nine hours of video-playback battery life."

The Surface Pro 4, following the original Surface Pro and the second and third generations of the device, comes with an all-new Surface Pen—cased in aluminium with 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity and reduced latency—which looks and feels like a fountain pen, offering a smooth and precise writing and drawing experience.

Surface Pro 4 features the popular continuous kickstand of Surface Pro 3, helping you get more done in any situation, Microsoft promises.

The optional new-and-improved Surface Pro 4 Type Cover with backlit keys and a larger trackpad, along with the new Surface Pen, give Surface Pro 4 unmatched versatility as a tablet or a laptop.
